HOW TO: Beat These Winter Blues!
1. Get moving!
Did you know rock climbing is really fun? It might seem intimidating, but once you get started it’s hard to stop! Rock climbing at Momentum is the best because it’s indoors (easier to breath), it’s safe (you’re protected by a harness), and they have multiple locations throughout the state! Rock climbing is actually proven to cheer you up. Not only will it tone and energize your body while increasing your flexibility, but it improves your mental stability and reduces stress! This article in Health Fitness Revolution explains that the sensation of reaching, climbing, reaching your goals and conquering fears gives you a feeling of accomplishment and ecstasy.
Momentum has membership opportunities, youth programs, and even offers other classes like yoga!
2. Create your dream dessert!
Sure, you’ve probably created your own ice cream flavors, milkshakes, and frozen yogurt creations. But have you made your own pastry yet?! At Create Donut you can!
It’s got a cool rustic environment that makes it fun to hang out in, and a friendly staff to help when it’s your first time. I tried this place after reading the raving Yelp reviews, and was not disappointed.
Want to create your own treat? Pick a doughy base. You can’t go wrong here, but you get to choose between a cupcake, donut, cronut (croissant donut), cheesecake or a cookie! Then you get to fill it with the good stuff! Use sorbet, gelato, whipped cream, or fluffy mousse! To finish it off you get to choose a glaze or drizzle to bring all the flavors together. And you can’t forget the toppings! Whether you want to top it with something tart, creamy, fruity, or chocolatey, you’ve got options.
Not in the mood to make that many decisions? Let the menu make the decision for you! You have options like house-made shaved ice, popular donut creations, sundaes, pies, cheesecake, waffles, crepes and soda with gelato! My personal favorite is grapefruit soda with a scoop of grapefruit gelato. If you’re in a warmer mood, try a scoop of gelato in your hot chocolate! It will melt and make your cocoa even more delicious.
The idea of meditation is certainly intimidating. Sitting still and calm and thinking about nothing?! It’s hard, but certainly beneficial. Nobody can avoid stress it seems, but we can all do something to help it. Huffington Post explains that meditation regulates your emotions and improves your concentration. They also bring up the importance of self care. When you’re taking time to meditate, you’re committing and creating beneficial habits for yourself. It’s likely to help you make better decisions for yourself in your everyday life. All of this will increase your happiness, improve your cardiovascular health and is shown to have anti aging benefits.
And you can enjoy all of these benefits from the comfort of your own home! I was introduced to this YouTube video, and it’s been a perfect place to start as a beginner.

The app Headspace is also an incredible source for beginners and experienced meditators alike. They offer a 10 day free trial so you can test it out before you commit. If you just want to lay down and relax, I love the app Calm. It plays soft sounds of nature, and offers some guided meditation as well. It has a lot of free features to take advantage of as well, I’ve never paid for a subscription and loved the free parts of the app.
Speaking of self care, get a facial while you’re at it! The air quality isn’t great for your skin, and feeling good and healthy is an important part of feeling happy. Get a 45 minute organic European facial for $39 instead of $80 by purchasing through Groupon! This facial promises to rehydrate your dry skin without causing a breakout.
5. Get together with your loved ones!
Human contact is always a mood booster, so get some of your family and friends together and have some fun! The rest of our blog is full of fun ideas that you can do in Salt Lake City. Why not try something new?
